Attorney John Dalli Selected by the President of the New York State Bar Association to Join Task Force on Nursing Homes and Long-Term Care Facilities

John Dalli to join New York State Bar task forceAttorney John Dalli of Dalli & Marino, LLP has been selected by New York State Bar Association President Scott M. Karson as a member of the newly formed Task Force on Nursing Homes and Long-Term Care Facilities

Attorney John Dalli is proud to announce his appointment to the newly launched Task Force on Nursing Homes & Long-Term Care of the New York State Bar Association (NYSBA) to investigate the disproportionate number of deaths of thousands of elderly New York nursing home and long-term care facility residents during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The NYSBA has convened this Task Force to review current laws and regulations that govern the care in nursing homes and skilled nursing facilities across the State. In addition the creation of this task force comes amid reports that the U.S. Justice Department is reviewing data on orders in several states that may have resulted in thousands of deaths in nursing homes.

How Were New York Nursing Home Residents Impacted by the COVID-19 Pandemic?

It has been widely reported that some of the earliest and deadliest waves of the virus took place among the elderly and vulnerable individuals residing in nursing homes and long-term care facilities. The New York Times reported that 41% of all coronavirus deaths in the U.S. are connected to nursing homes, and coronavirus deaths in New York nursing homes were higher than those of any other state.

According to NYSBA President Scott M. Karson,

“We entrust these facilities to care for our loved ones, and as lawyers, we must do our part to make sure something like this doesn’t happen again.”

For many nursing home residents, particularly those in low income and minority communities, the COVID-19 epidemic has uncovered the deficiencies in staffing and training that have existed in nursing homes for many years.

What Goal Does the Task Force on Nursing Homes & Long-Term Care Aim to Achieve?

The task force will investigate what challenges nursing home facilities faced during the coronavirus crisis. Together, they will develop recommendations based on various perspectives of the 19-member task force to create a thorough and comprehensive plan.

Mr. Dalli and other task force members will present recommendations to all interested parties in their efforts to create change in the protections provided for our elderly and vulnerable residents in the State of New York.
